Trump Transitions Toward a New Term

With his re-election, the former US president begins his administration’s transition to his January 2025 inauguration. Among first announcements as a Commander-in-Chief included the selection of Pete Hegseth to head up the Department of Defense….

First, what about those Hegseth tattoos that have been all over the Web?

Here’s a bit about the ‘tats’ and Pete’s point of view, via an interview with Big Lead and research by Distractify.

“Deus Vult” is inscribed on Hegseth’s right arm, and the Latin phrase may be obscure to some. It means “God will it,” and it originated during the Crusade as a battle cry. In more recent years, the phrase has been adopted by far-right groups, and seems to suggest that America should be an explicitly Christian nation. “Deus Vult” is not the only signal of Hegseth’s beliefs scrawled on his body.

What about the crosses, the Jerusalem Cross?

The Jerusalem Cross on his chest is one big cross surrounded by smaller crosses. The Jerusalem Cross is another symbol that dates back to the Crusades and is another symbol that has been linked to Christian nationalism and far-right groups.

Hegseth has other tattoos that reveal his nationalism and his far-right beliefs.

He has “We the People” on one of his arms, an American flag that features a machine gun on his upper arm, as well as the year 1775 in Roman numerals.

In addition to those, Pete also has the “Join or Die” symbol on his inner forearm, and an Infantry Regiment patch on his arm.

Cross and sword on forearm

He also has other Christian iconography on his arm like a cross with a sword through it, which represents the bible verse Matthew 10:34.

The verse reads: “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.”

So really, who is Pete?

Many were asking ‘who is this guy’ when he was picked to head up the most potent military force in history of the world.  US Senators responsible for ‘advice and consent’ confirmation hearings indicated surprise at first. The president-to-be responded by demanding the Senate confirm his Cabinet choices and appointments immediately and that he could employ ‘recess appointments’. He has claimed that the election gave him a “mandate” (it did not, in fact, it was a close popular vote and the Constitution remains as law and precedent.) The Trump push for new presidential powers, including turning away from traditional roles and powers of the Senate, is now TBD. The first set of appointees, with Hegseth, Robert F. Kennedy, Matt Gaetz and this week’s nominees, will provide a view of the politics and intent of the new administration.

Social media and a swath of the Internet were quick to look at Hegseth’s background and at the recent statements of the former military man. Is he going to go along to get along with the president when it comes to war or peace, the Mideast, with Israel’s wars or Ukraine and Ryssua, and here in the US of A when he could be ordered to deploy troops stateside.

In the background are the policy questions and answers that the US Senate and Congressional members, the press and public, will be bringing forth for the Cabinet nominees. The reach of the Pentagon will be Hegseth’s realm. What role will religion have, or evangelicals have.

So, to better understand who’s Pete, let’s look at a recent performance at CPAC, one that featured his political view of what to do and what not to do when attacked, or caught in a ‘kill zone’ and his tactical advice not to hunker down but to attack.

The American people have the responsibility to look closely at Hegseth and the president’s nominees.

Hegseth and his point of view and the incoming president’s plans for the country and world are too serious to go outside Constitutional powers and into the hands of other forces…
